The stage background... Tapati has become such a big event that some people on the island have become quite adept at all the technicalities involved in putting on a stage performance. The next few pictures are from the Kai Kai competition. The contestant forms a cat's cradle with string and explains the story that corresponds with that configuration. Sometimes the story is told; other times, it is almost as if they are singing. I'm not sure what this competition is called, but is seems to be a sort of storytelling. The group comes out and sings a story, while one or two people in the group display props pertaining to the story. The people with the props often dance with the props while the group is singing.
The next few pictures are of this 'storytelling' competition. 'Storytelling' competition. 'Storytelling' competition.
(This was such a lucky shot! I love this picture!) 'Storytelling' competition.
Yes, that is a live animal on his shoulders. 'Storytelling' competition.
He carried that lamb on his shoulders throughout the entire song. It was amazingly well-behaved considering the fact that the dancer was bouncing up and down almost the entire time. 'Storytelling' competition. 'Storytelling' competition. TAKONA! This is one of the competitions that everyone looks forward to. Competitors paint their bodies with various motifs, then must explain their paintings in Rapanui.
The last few pictures are of the various contestants for the night.
